Youth Involvement

A core component of MBK Houston is to engage youth and increase the assets that they have to help them be successful. In our city, many youth face immense challenges beginning before birth and continue into adulthood. We have a responsibility to our communities to create and make available equitable opportunities and resources, so that all Houstonians can thrive and grow.

Fifth Ward Enrichment

Currently, during the school day, each school has a case manager with 40 boys on his case load. During the school day, the project managers work with students and provide life skill empowering workshops to the boys on his caseload. The expansion of the during the day component of 5th Ward Enrichment will be accomplished by bringing in outside "mentors" to connect with young men, not on caseload, and conduct life skill empowerment workshops.

Youth Build

YouthBuild is a program for 16 - 26 year olds that teaches construction skills and supports students in getting their GED. Participants also get a stipend for participating. The contact for YouthBuild is Travis Miller (travis.miller@serhouston.org, 330-641-4600). They have a new class starting up in June and are currently recruiting participants. CGP Houston - Mentee Application (2017-2018) The Chauncy Glover Project (CGP) is an extensive, hands-on mentoring program, created by Emmy Award winning ABC 13 News Anchor Chauncy Glover, to groom inner city teenage boys into upstanding and accomplished gentlemen. The program focuses on education, manhood, self-empowerment, financial responsibility, etiquette, college readiness and so much more. Youth Advisory Council

Recruits youth across the MBK Feeder Patterns and engage them in community based opportunity gaps and provide a forum to express their voices and address issues that matter to them while promoting activism and community service.

Redirect

The Redirect Juvenile Diversion Program is a youth centered holistic community-based program focused on reducing crime, violence and providing a second chance. Redirect utilizes a comprehensive assessment and case management process that addresses both criminogenic needs and protective factors, from the moment a youth enters our program until the moment they exit. By outlining the most effective way to work with our youth, we allow for the youth's time in our care to be used as effectively as possible, and in turn, allow for a more successful effect in reducing their risk to offend or re-offend.
