It only takes an hour of your time each week during the school year to instill a lifelong love of reading in a student. Depending on which method you choose, you will be trained to:
Volunteer Houston believes that the success of the nonprofit community is defined by its next generation. It is our responsibility to help build that generation by providing programs and service opportunities, in partnership with the nonprofit community, that engage and transform not only the student, but the nonprofit agency and the communities they serve.
To provide high quality summer enrichment programing through the CDF Freedom Schools program model to the MBK Houston Action Areas. Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) recruits thousands of parents and community partners to donate their time, resources, and knowledge in support of the district’s primary goal to increase student achievement. Help a child realize his or her full potential! Volunteer mentors, "Bigs" as we like to call them, are needed to meet once a week with a student, "Little", for one-to-one mentoring in the classroom, school library, school computer room, or school cafeteria. Although it takes place at schools, our School-Based Mentoring program isn't limited to the classroom. Of course, some Littles do talk with their Bigs about class, or do homework, or read together, but it's perfectly fine to shoot hops in the gym or play on the playground. At the end of the day, it's really all about starting a friendship. providing guidanmce and inspiring them to reach their potential.
Our mentoring program is about real men giving real time to uplift youth in our community. We work with a talented group of young men with unlimited potential and it's our challenge to give them the tools to reach that potential and become assets to our society. We take this challenge very seriously. Come join us in our journey.
